Falco the Peregrine Falcon

This sweeping mosaic captures a bird of prey in mid flight, conveying its speed and fluency of motion. It also highlights the dappled pattern and complex symmetry of the falcon.

Brutus the Buzzard

The buzzard is a bird of prey that is becoming increasingly common around my home on the North York Moors. I was keen to capture the graceful hovering action of the bird, when its patterned feathers and wing shape are particularly striking. I also wanted to convey the rich golden colours caught in the light.

Vitreous glass, vintage china, mirror, ceramic tile, millefiori, and Van Gogh glass.

36 x 28 x 2 cms

£250

Ragnar the Red Kite

This diving red kite is intended to show the speed and movement of the bird, as well as its power and energy. I focused on the intricate detail of the patterned wings and the beauty of the red and golden hues.

Vitreous and stained glass, Van Gogh glass, gold mirror, vintage china and ceramic tile.

37 x 54 x 2 cms

About Jane

The natural world is the recurring inspiration for Jane’s work. She is drawn to themes that relate to the landscape and wildlife around her home on the North York Moors. Jane starts projects by undertaking drawings based on meticulous observation, but also by walking across landscapes to experience the emotional resonance of places, as well as their flora and fauna.

Although the mosaics comprise elements of decorative ornamentation, the realistic details of pattern and texture are integral to the designs.

Jane treats the shaping of individual tiles like the mark making of the paintbrush, with each piece being carefully cut by hand. The materials used in the mosaics are also specifically selected to include locally sourced elements such as Whitby jet, Sunderland lustre ware china, or found and recycled objects.
