Looking Glass Mosaics

The Mikado

This piece was made as a gift for my sister. She has always loved the 'Mikado' opera, and having stumbled across a beautiful tea cup and saucer in a charity shop with the china mark 'The Mikado', the Japanese themed design followed very naturally. I love the quality of glass that destines it to appear differently in every light.

Garden Niche

A visit to Marrakech enriched my interest in the architectural themes I saw in the Riads in the city. There were lots of small gardens central to the buildings which had wonderful niches with vases and tiling adorning the walls.

Antique ceramic and stained glass. The subtle tones and delicacy of the detail on the ceramic had an ancient quality to it

About Lesley Atkinson

I am a self taught mosaic artist based in the seaside town of South Shields the Northeast of England, dating back to Roman times. The town has a unique culture and is a source of inspiration. I am a healthcare professional with an MSc in neonatal Nursing. Over my 40 years in the NHS I have always enjoyed creative pursuits as a means of escape and enrichment., including fine needlework, card design and cake making.

My passion for mosaics both modern and classical has grown from these interests, and arisen from a long term fascination for the ancient skills and the longevity of the creations which have lasted centuries. My inspirations are my love of colour and tone, texture and light, and examples form fine art.

Many of my creations are botanical in nature, and I also have a huge interest in architecture and pattern spanning many periods and cultures. I have designed pieces to suit the tastes or loves of customers or recipients.

I work mainly with reclaimed antique ceramics and stained glass from my Kitchen studio, and incorporate natural stones, shells and other found treasure.

I am a new member of BAMM North and am very excited to be exhibiting alongside many other talented artists at Harlow Carr, Harrogate, later this month. I am travelling to Ravenna, Italy, this year to study classical mosaic at the Ravenna Mosaic School. I hope to offer some local workshops in the future and would love to be involved in some community/public art work. I would welcome any discussions for commissions.
